Despite Regional Disruption, UAE Ranks Among the World’s Top 4 Countries for Expats

If you've ever wondered whether the UAE still holds its shine for people relocating from abroad, the numbers just gave a clear answer: yes, and then some.

The Emirates has landed the No. 4 spot in the 2026 Expat Insider survey, an annual study run by the global expat network InterNations. Only Panama, Mexico, and Thailand ranked higher. Rounding out the rest of the top ten were Brazil, Spain, Singapore, Portugal, Malaysia, and Luxembourg - meaning the UAE outpaced several countries long considered expat favorites.

What makes this result stand out isn't just the ranking itself, but the timing. Survey responses were gathered between February and March 2026, a window that straddled the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict. In other words, expats were weighing in on their life in the UAE right as regional tensions were escalating - and the country still came out on top for the Middle East by a wide margin.

Where the UAE Truly Dominates: Everyday Life

The most striking result isn't the overall ranking - it's the UAE's performance in the Expat Essentials Index, where it claimed first place out of 31 destinations worldwide. This index looks at the nuts and bolts of actually moving somewhere: paperwork, language barriers, digital infrastructure, and daily logistics.

A few standout figures:

  • 80% of respondents called the visa process straightforward, compared to a global average of just 55%.

  • The UAE topped the charts for the ability to live comfortably without speaking the local language.

  • 64% found housing easy to find, well above the 44% global average — though rents in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are still climbing and remain a sticking point.

  • Strong marks across digital government services, cashless payments, banking, and internet speed rounded out the picture.

Safety, Stability, and Quality of Life

The UAE also placed third globally for overall quality of life. Safety was a major driver here - 94% of respondents felt personally secure, and 89% expressed satisfaction with the country's political stability. Healthcare, restaurants, leisure options, road infrastructure, and cultural offerings all scored well too.

Careers: The Biggest Draw

Career prospects are clearly pulling people toward the UAE. The country ranked third in the Working Abroad Index and took first place specifically for career opportunities.

  • More than half of respondents rated the job market positively.

  • 80% said relocating to the UAE boosted their career - nearly 25 points above the global average of 55%.

Saudi Arabia also cracked the top 10 in the Working Abroad Index, landing at No. 9, a sign that the wider Gulf region is becoming an increasingly serious draw for internationally mobile professionals.

The Trade-Offs

It's not all upside. The survey flagged two real weak spots:

  1. Work-life balance - the UAE ranked just 24th in this subcategory, suggesting the career upside comes at the cost of longer hours and heavier workloads.

  2. Personal finances - this was the UAE's weakest major category at 18th place. High living costs, especially housing, schooling, and healthcare, can eat into otherwise attractive salaries.

The Bottom Line

Despite these caveats, expat sentiment remains largely positive: 69% of respondents said they were happy living in the UAE, just shy of the 70% global average, and nearly a third described themselves as completely happy - well above the 24% global figure.

The takeaway is a country that isn't cheap and doesn't offer the easiest work-life balance, but more than makes up for it with career opportunities, safety, infrastructure, and sheer ease of settling in. In a region marked by uncertainty, that combination is proving hard to beat.
